A Wollongong pharmacy can claim its service is among the best in Australia after earning national accreditation.

Hospital Hill Pharmacy in Crown St completed almost eight months of rigorous work before earning a citation as a Quality Care Pharmacy from the Pharmacy Guild of Australia.

The guild is running a national campaign to ensure the highest possible standards are maintained. The accreditation is regarded as another form of quality control as the industry is threatened by deregulation.

Under the accreditation program all Hospital Hill staff had to pass stringent standards laid out in a workbook and program, with the pharmacy then undergoing an inspection from a guild auditor.

``We have a staff of 30 and are open from 8am to 9.30pm, so it was quite a task going through all the aspects needed to attain the accreditation," Hospital Hill Pharmacy shop manager Leanne Mueller said.

``It did take us longer than it should have and it was a real effort, but it has all been worth it. This is an important recognition in maintaining the already high standards we set ourselves and the guild sets.

``As far as I know only three or four pharmacies in the Illawarra have this accreditation."

After months of hard work the audit itself presented a degree of pressure with all staff open to at least two questions from 69 procedures listed in the workbook.
